The Douro region is one of the most fascinating areas of Portugal, as much for its history as for its wines, the most famous of course being Port
Classified a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as the most ancient demarcated wine region in the world, the Douro region is an area of rare beauty that is well worth discovering.
Traditionally port wine was transported down the river Douro in flat-bottom boats called "barcos rabelo" and then stored in wine cellars in the district of Gaia in Porto. Although the wine cellars remain in the same place, transportation methods have since changed. the Douro is the second largest river in Portugal and its source is at 2080 meters high in the Urbión Mountains in Spain. Inside portugese territory the river is 210km long and its entire length is navigable from Barca D'Alva to the city of Porto where it ends in the Atlantic Ocean.
There is quite simply no better way to discover and fully appreciate the Douro than by taking one of our relaxing Douro Cruises. Our 7-night cruises and 4-night mini cruise plus city break are designed to give you the choice to do as little or as much as you want during your week with us.
